Nature Restoration Regulation in action: the complete webinar series is now available by the Greening Cities Partnership
The EU Nature Restoration Regulation, in force since 2024, sets binding targets for restoring degraded ecosystems, including cities and towns. It requires Member States to halt the loss of green space and tree canopy cover by 2030, and steadily increase both thereafter. The Greening Cities Partnership supports this transition by equipping cities with tools, knowledge, and examples for effective urban ecosystem restoration.
The webinar series
Between spring and summer 2025, the Greening Cities Partnership organised a six-part webinar series to help cities, regions, and national governments implement the EU Nature Restoration Regulation. Each session focused on a key dimension of urban ecosystem restoration β from establishing baselines and designing roadmaps, to engaging citizens, adapting regulations, and coordinating across governance levels. The series combined EU-level guidance, local case studies, and interactive exchanges with experts and practitioners.
The series covered:
- π Webinar 1: Urban Ecosystem Restoration β Baselines and Data
- πΊοΈ Webinar 2: Developing a Municipal Roadmap for Urban Ecosystem Restoration
- ποΈ Webinar 3: Building and Spatial Regulations for Nature Restoration
- π² Webinar 4: Regulations for Nature Restoration on Municipal-Owned Land
- π± Webinar 5: Citizen Engagement for Nature Restoration
- π€ Webinar 6: Collaboration on National Restoration Plans
Looking ahead
The Greening Cities Partnership will continue its work on the EU Nature Restoration Regulation by advancing the Actions set out in its Action Plan and through ongoing Partnership and Working Group meetings. A key highlight in the coming months will be the organisation of two interactive workshops at the European Week of Regions and Cities 2025:

Bankable Public Green Infrastructure and Services: A Practical Approach
This workshop will address one of the central challenges of urban greening: how to make projects financially viable. Experts from Brussels Environnement, the European Investment Bank, and Bankers without Boundaries will share solutions to overcome financing barriers and offer practical roadmaps for bankable nature-based solutions.

How Much Nature Do We Need in Our Cities? Turning Data into Urban Greening Action
This session will introduce the new methodology that is being developed by the Greening Cities Partnership, under the ESPON-GILL project, to help cities quantify their demand for green infrastructure and identify where it is most needed. Participants will explore European case studies and test practical tools to design data-driven urban nature plans and strengthen local climate action.
