Greening Cities Partnership Webinar: Regulations for Nature Restoration on Municipal Owned Land
Rethinking Municipal-Owned Land
This session will focus on how cities can use municipal-owned land to meet urban nature restoration targets under the EU Nature Restoration Law. With a focus on both single-scale and large-scale renovation projects, we will discuss policies for integrating biodiversity targets into new developments and retrofitting projects. The conversation will also address how urban targets under the Nature Restoration Law can align with the revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and Energy Efficiency Directive (EED).
City Insights and Practical Examples
The webinar will feature presentations from two cities actively working to align municipal land management with sustainability goals:
-
Barcelona Metropolitan Area will present their Sustainability Protocol, a framework guiding housing, public facilities, and urban development interventions in streets, squares, and parks that respect environmental considerations.
-
The Hague will share insights from the Binckhorst urbanisation project, developed around ambitions for climate adaptation, biodiversity, and liveability.
Interactive Format
Following the presentations, the speakers will engage in an interview-style discussion moderated by Leon Kapetas (Resilient Cities Network). This format encourages active audience participation—bring your questions and contribute to the discussion on integrating nature restoration into urban policy frameworks.
