Greening Cities Partnership Webinar: Building and Spatial Regulations for Nature Restoration
Greening the Built Environment
This session will focus on the policies and planning approaches that cities can adopt to bring nature back into the built environment. From single-building interventions to large-scale regeneration schemes, we will discuss how nature restoration can be embedded into building regulations, planning policies, and retrofitting programmes. The conversation will also explore how urban targets under the Nature Restoration Law (NRL) can align with other EU frameworks such as the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED).
City Insights and Academic Perspectives
The webinar will feature presentations from three leading voices in urban nature policy:
-
City of Bristol will share their experience with the Biodiversity Net Gain policy, which mandates a 10% increase in biodiversity for each new development.
-
City of Paris will present their Bioclimatic Master Plan, including a “green buildings index” used to retrofit and green existing structures.
-
University of Naples will offer an academic perspective on urban regeneration, highlighting the value of “soft law” measures and incentives to support nature restoration goals.
Interactive Format
Following the presentations, the speakers will engage in an interview-style discussion moderated by Leon Kapetas (Resilient Cities Network). This format invites active participation from the audience—bring your questions, share your experience, and contribute to shaping nature-positive building practices across Europe.
